The co-directors of the new indie dramedy “The Peanut Butter Falcon“, which is currently in theaters around the country, Michael Schwartz and Tyler Nilson are the guests in the first segment. I met up with the filmmakers recently at the Lighthouse International Film Festival where they showed the film. A modern Mark Twain style adventure story, “The Peanut Butter Falcon” tells the story of Zak (Gottsagen), a young man with Down syndrome, who runs away from a residential nursing home to follow his dream of attending the professional wrestling school of his idol, The Salt Water Redneck (Thomas Haden Church). A strange turn of events pairs him on the road with Tyler (Shia LaBeouf), a small time outlaw on the run, who becomes Zak’s unlikely coach and ally. Together they wind through deltas, elude capture, drink whiskey, find God, catch fish, and convince Eleanor (Dakota Johnson), a kind nursing home employee charged with Zak’s return, to join them on their journey. The film also stars Bruce Dern and John Hawkes.
With a long career promoting street art, music and film as well as pioneering online marketing through social media, Marc Schiller was well regarded as a communications expert. But in 2015, Marc suffered a stroke on both sides of his brain, leaving him with a language impairment known as aphasia and with some cognitive deficits. After nearly a year of assembling hours of footage, filming interviews and editing all the material, Marc’s team has completed a cut of the film which is called “No Bone”. Marc, who has visited the podcast twice before on Episodes 176 & 290, returns to the podcast and is joined by two of his collaborators: wife Sara Schiller and “No Bone” producer Alejandro Veciana.
