Intro: this episode begins with one in a series of updates on the Rooftop Films season by programming director Dan Nuxoll.
In this ‘doc-jammed’ podcast, Episode 154, the first guest is returning filmmaker Zachary Heinzerling. Zachary’s new film, “Cutie and the Boxer”, is screening with Rooftop Films on Saturday, August 3rd on the roof of the Old American Can Factory. He is joined by his film’s subjects Ushio & Noriko Shinohara. The film has previously screened at many top film festivals including Sundance and SxSW, and will be having a theatrical release on August 16th.
Next up is filmmaker Amy Nicholson, who also returns to Filmwax Radio, to discuss the upcoming theatrical release of her new documentary, “Zipper“. The film will begin its run at the IFC Center on August 9th. This segment was recorded in Coney Island on a recent Sunday morning.
Last up is a conversation with Elsewhere Films filmmaker Tia Lessin (“Trouble the Water“), also making a return to Filmwax Radio. She and her husband, Carl Deal, have been the subject of some controversy recently when PBS pulled financing and the broadcast of their latest documentary, “Citizen Koch“. The film takes on the Koch Brothers and their influence on American politics, and how candidates and political parties are financed. You can make a contribution to Tia & Carl’s Kickstarter campaign and help the film get finished and distributed.
Music: K’naan’s cover of ‘With God on Our Side’ (“Chimes of Freedom: The Songs of Bob Dylan”); ‘Coney Island Baby’ sung by Tom Waits and co-written by Kathleen Brennan (“Blood Money”); and ‘Fireproof’ which can be found on the new The National album “Trouble Will Find Me”.
