First time on the podcast, as part of Filmwax’s 2021 Tribeca Film Festival coverage, filmmaker Bo McGuire. Bo’s first feature length documentary, “Socks on Fire” won the Grand Jury Award at last year’s Tribeca Film Festival but finally gets a public screening this time around. In fact, “Socks on Fire” is the closing night film on Sunday, June 20th at NYC’s Hudson Yards. The outdoor screening is sold-out but there’s also a virtual screening on Monday, June 21st at 6PM. Synopsis: When the matriarch of a large Southern family passed without a written will, her children became embroiled in a bitter fight over their mother’s estate. The fracas prompted director Bo McGuire to return home to Hokes Bluff, Alabama, to document the mounting standoff between his two childhood idols—his now-homophobic aunt and his out-and-proud gay uncle—in a battle that threatens to tear apart multiple generations of a formerly tight-knit tribe. In the process of investigating this epic family feud, McGuire also reflects on his own coming-of-age as a queer youth in the rural South.
This segment celebrates the indie film “The Carnivores” with director Caleb Michael Johnson and actors Lindsay Burdge (returning to the podcast after 8 years) and Tallie Medel. In the midst of a relationship crisis, a woman (Medel) begins to resent her partner’s (Burdge) attention to her very ill dog. The film, which also stars Filmwax friend Frank Mosley, is currently available on various streaming platforms and in select theaters.
