Filmwax turns 10 this week. In order to celebrate I’ve invited back the podcast’s first ever guest, filmmaker Zachary Levy (first interviewed on September 14, 2011). We get a chance here to both reminisce and to catch up.
First time on the podcast, filmmaker Rachel Boynton (“Our Brand Is Crisis”) with her latest documentary, “Civil War (or, Who Do We Think We Are)” which is executive produced by Henry Louis Gates, Jr., Brad Pitt, and Filmwax friend Sam Pollard. Rachel’s documentary is a timely and probing look at how Americans tell the story of their Civil War and its legacy of slavery and racism. The film opens in select theaters nationwide (including the IFC Center in NYC and Laemmle Santa Monica in LA) on Friday, September 17. It will soon after be available on the Peacock streaming platform.
Also, first time on the podcast, filmmaker Lina Roessler with her first feature “Best Sellers”. The comedy stars Sir Michael Caine & Aubrey Plaza, and was an official selection at the Berlin International Film Festival. Lucy Stanbridge (Plaza) has inherited her father’s publishing house, but the ambitious would-be editor has nearly sunk it with failing titles. She discovers she is owed a book by Harris Shaw (Caine), a reclusive, cantankerous, booze-addled author who originally put the company on the map decades earlier. In a last-ditch effort to save it, Lucy and Harris release his new book and embark on a tour from hell that changes them both in ways they didn’t expect. “Best Sellers” opens today in theaters and on demand on Friday, September 17th.
