The guests on the last episode of 2019 include the team behind a new dramatic film about the emotional toll on one death row warden, “Clemency” director Chinonye Chhuku & actor Aldis Hodge; also the director of the new documentary “What She Said: The Art of Pauline Kael”, Rob Garver stops by.
[5 mins. 52 secs.] In the last episode of 2019, I speak with Chinonye Chukwu (“alaskaLand”) the director of a powerful new dramatic film called “Clemency“. After that I speak with Aldis Hodge, one of the actors in the film. Years of carrying out death row executions have taken a toll on prison warden, Bernadine Williams (Alfre Woodard). The emotional wedge in her marriage grows. Memories of a recently botched execution plague her daily. As she prepares to execute another inmate, Bernadine must confront the psychological and emotional demons her job creates, ultimately connecting her to the man (Hodge) she is sanctioned to kill. The film, which is being distributed by Neon opens tomorrow, Friday, December 27th in New York City at the Angelika Film Center, BAM Rose Cinema and AMC Loews Kips Bay 15. Also it is screening in Los Angeles at The Landmark and AMC Burbank 16. The film opens wide over the coming weeks.
[37 mins. 23 secs.] Also, a conversation with Rob Garver, the director of the new documentary “What She Said: The Art of Pauline Kael“. The New Yorker film critic Pauline Kael battled to make her mark — fueled by brilliance, unshakable self-confidence, a complicated past, and a deep love of the arts. With over 35 new interviews and never-before seen archival material, “What She Said” is an unvarnished portrait of a pioneer who was both admired and resented for what she said about art in an era of great moviemaking. Rob’s film is currently screening at Film Forum in NYC.
